We would like to introduce Dr Dave O’Brien into the Large Animal and Equine team here at Tauranga Vets.

Dave comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and experience in the Equine and Large Animal field, with a strong area of focus being in equine reproduction and artificial Insemination.

Dave graduated from Massey University 2003 with a Double Major Bachelor of Animal Science and Zoology. After graduating, Dave worked for Massey University Equine Research for three years, conducting research into protecting horses from bone related causes of lameness.

He went on to begin Vet School in 2006, where he met fellow Tauranga Vets team member Dr Marcus Allan. Dave also has a Certification in Bovine Artificial Insemination and has collaborated on a number of published equine research papers.

He has held a role of study director for a well known equine medicine company, researching a product for safety and effectiveness, submitted to the Government to approve sale in New Zealand.

Dave says that as a first opinion vet, he enjoys offering a range of options for his clients.

“Animals don’t read the vet textbooks, but sometimes specialists can make it seem that way. There are plenty of ways to try to achieve a certain outcome. I like to outline different approaches, discuss the expectations of each, and offer the client choices to meet their individual situations,” he says.

Dave says he is excited about working with our team and that the role will permit him to focus primarily on his most enjoyed veterinary branch, Equine, while also allowing him to keep in touch with other large animal aspects (having eight years of experience in the large animal sector).

Outside of work, Dave has a young family including daughter Ella and dog Abby.

Please contact us on 0800 838 7267 to make an appointment with Dave, or any of our Equine or Large Animal teams.
